This novel is one of my favourites and one of those that stay with you a long time after you have read it.
George Bone is helplessly in love with Netta who is cold, haughty and manipulative. Despite this she is still perfect in George’s eyes – except when something snaps in his mind and he realises that he must kill her.
The culture of a generation and the premonitions of doom that pervaded London life in the lead up to the war are perfectly captured in this novel.
George will break your heart and terrify you in equal measure.
Hangover Square was adapted into a film noir in 1945, directed by John Brahm.
